Diagnosed with PCOS...options? Clomid alternatives?

I've been back and forth to doctors for the last few months trying to figure out why my husband and I haven't been successful in our TTC and why my cycle is completely out of whack. I had several series of blood tests and today I had both a transabdominal and transvaginal U/S that determined I have the typical follicular cysts of PCOS (but I don't have high androgenic hormone levels, excess body hair, weight gain, acne, or anything else). Regardless, my doctor thought it was likely that I have PCOS. She referred me to an endocrinologist to follow-up on my DHEAS levels (which were slightly, but not terrible, elevated), after which she said we're going to start fertility treatment. What exactly does that entail? She said probably Clomid but honestly...I'm scared to take clomid. I hear things about birth defects, dried up CM, women who have to continually increase the dose, weight gain, etc and it all just has me really on edge. I would prefer to not have to take it, but I feel like I'm at a total and complete loss, where the sense of desperation has exceeded my patience and I feel like I'm going to be doomed to be childless forever. I really want to do whatever I possibly can to conceive and have a successful pregnancy and healthy baby, but there's a holistic part of me that is scared to death of having to force my body to do it with pharmaceuticals. Anyone have success with non-clomid treatments? Vitex? herbs? Diet and exercise?

I tried Clomid but didn't like it because it gave me bad headaches and nausea, even if I took it with food like they recommend. My cousin told me about Fertibella, which has no side effects, and that worked for me! The ingredients are similar to a prenatal vitamin, but trials boast a 65% success rate, which I think it pretty good for an OTC treatment. As for diet & exercise... I decreased my exercise to just walking the dog for an hour a day because I had been really working out at the gym to get my BMI down to a better level and the doctor said that can decrease the hormones needed to help conception take place. Also, I stopped drinking coffee and eating fish and ate more fruit, veggies, vitamin c, vitamin e, zinc, folic acid and yogurt. Good luck!
