Diabetic Keto Acidosis- I have lost 1/2 my hair in 3 months, Im worried?

I have searched on yahoo answers and have found that hairloss is common after going through Diabetic Ketoacidosis, however- my hairloss continues to fall out and isnt slowing down. In October I was Diagnosed with DKA upon admittance to the ER because my head doctor mis diagnosed my diabetes and put me on steriods which put me up to a 900 sugar level. From my symptoms, I was believe to be in DKA for over a month before my sugars were stabilized, and have been since October. However, I didnt lose hair before November, then in November I started losing ALOT of hair. I discussed this with my doctor in November and he said not to worry about it, however because its still happening and Ive lost half my hair already and continue to lose large huge clumps of hair when I shower- I am concerned that this is growing "out of the norm" and into the problematic stage. To be frank- I have alot of hair and its thick- so my hair appears normal now- not thick anymore. And I Have no balding spots, which is good. Now- I know I should see my doctor, expect for the fact that I Have no job, no money and no family assistance to help me because I am an only child with no relatives with no job because I am on disability for my Multiple Sclerosis- this is why I am asking for advice from yahoo answers instead of going to the doctor because I cant afford it this month- and by next month I am afraid about losing even more hair. So my question to you guys is- when you experienced hair loss- did you lose half your hair? When did the hair loss stop? By 3 months should my hair loss be stopping? What if anything could they do if I went to the doctor? Hair loss is not genetic in my family- so I know its diabetes related- I just dont know how to stop it! Thank you guys soo soo much!!! Angela :)

Wow, you sound like you are having a tough time. I found this article and it explains alot.

Alright. I know what your going through. I've almost died from DKA..I've lost count..(that sounds really bad) I've been losing hair..but it getting less and less..and I was ALWAYS afraid that it was not normal..and I am still surprised i'm not bald..DON'T STRESS about it..that's not going to help either >.< Try using a conditioner that makes your hair softer..and less tangled when you go to brush it after the shower...and don't blow dry curl or straighten your hair for a while. Take care of your blood sugar and it should stop gradually. If that doesn't work when you get the doc next time ask them to check your thyroid, that might have something to do with hair loss if the thyroid function is abnormal. THEN ask them to check you for PCOS. If it's non of that then I wish you the best! I hope your hair gets nice and thick again (:

I am not a hair expert at all, but will share what I was told when this happened to me... The nutrients and stress etc that affect hair growth are still in your system even after the original stimulus has occurred. Kind of like if you take vitamins it can take a while for those nutrients to build up in your system and when you stop taking them ,it takes a while to taper off. The body goes through cycles. You may be still be cycling out of the hair loss. My hair grew back. Maybe check out what you can eat to help move out of this "cycle" as soon as possible.
