SHIH TZU PUP VACCINE HELP!? i just returned home from the vet. he gave my 3 month old shih the Meriel (brand) 6 in 1 shot. which cost 13 dollars. i asked for a receipt which says the shot was called RECOMBITIC (???) C6. (but i asked for the bottle and read 'Meriel' as the brand and and there are only 5 viruses on the label that it would fight) and i dont think he is a good vet (im asking him questions about the vaccines needed for my pup and he seemed about to lose his patience - isnt it his job? i mean basically to CARE for animals) and there were 2 bottles, the '6 in 1' bottle which is in powder and another one which he said IS the SIXTH vaccine, it is water-based, he said that it would serve to dilute the powder vaccine??. ive read searches that it would be enough to get 3 shots of 5 in 1 vaccines and an anti rabies on the 6th month. now this vet (after i told him that my pup just got 2 shot of 5 in 1, according to the breeder (well the 2nd shot i was there and saw it --and BTW, he was the one to give the pup the shots-- but when he gave her the 1st 5 in 1 shot i wasnt. he told me he'd send me the vaccination records t the pup as well as the papers i then asked if hed be able to send it today, the 11th and he said hed try and chances are less. so im expecting it within the week.) and so i told the vet about this and he told me to get the vaccination record if not he told me to disregard the first 2 shots my pup got and start all over again. and he wants a total of 5 shots.PLUS another for fungus and i guess rabies. and i asked wont all that vaccines be bad for him? and he told me its okay whats bad is getting more than 7 vaccines!!!!! after i got my puppy shot he told me that if ever my pup losses its appetite for 2 days withing 10 days then that should be alright. is this TRUE??? also what about what people said; that its okay to have 3 shots of 5 in 1 and then anti rabies on the 6th month and then yearly for the rabies. what should i follow??? and this is the same thing that the breeder told me. btw, there is another shih in the office 'confined' ( caged-the one that has grills instead of matting- with a little pillow) he said that she's confined after ABORTION and another thing she has her hair tied on top of her head which i think is too tight as it pulls it eye lids up a little, the shih i think doesnt mind though. im lost and i dont want my Apollo (puppy) to get sick or worst DIE! and he tried to sell this dog/cat vitamin which is for 10$ (i told him that im giving my puppy vitamins -there are 2 of them in bottles- already as the breeder told me too. its actually vitamins for kids -is this ok the vet told me that its wrong but ive read online that other breeders do it too--, he told me to give .5ml of each once a day) he is the vet when i had my first shih but it died due to parvo weeks before his last shot was about to be given. can someone please help me!!!
Sounds like you need a new vet. Puppies generally need a first set and a booster and thats it. Rabies is done separate and there is no booster after. After that, a booster is given annually (usually unless you have a custom schedule.)
It can seem overwhelming that your dog is receiving so many vaccines, but this is the best insurance we have against illness. Puppies have natural antibodies from the mother that slowly dissipate. Vaccines will not work during this time period. Puppies that still have maternal antibodies will not be affected by the vaccine, and therefore they receive boosters, because we don't know at what exact time the antibodies are no longer in effect. There are risks with vaccinating, but for the most part, the benefits outweigh them. Some vaccines are different. Some have a powder and a liquid component, and both parts are mixed together before the vaccine can be used. Some vaccines, like rabies, come ready to use. If you don't have a vaccination record, it's better to be safe than sorry - chances are high that the puppy's antibodies were in effect at that time, anyway. There are some side effects to vaccines that are normal. Your puppy may feel lethargic or not want to eat for a day or so. Allergic reactions are not common, but do happen (swelling at the site, etc.) This is normal, and your puppy should be normal after about a day. Different veterinarians have different policies regarding vaccines, so it's difficult to say if the breeder or the veterinarian is more correct. I would err on the side of the veterinarian. As long as you are feeding an AAFCO approved puppy food, you do not need vitamins, your puppy will get an excess. Puppy foods tend to have an excess of vitamins and minerals as it is, for extra insurance. If you are going to give vitamins, vitamins designed for human children are NOT appropriate for your puppy, your breeder may be incorrect. If you must give vitamins, only choose those appropriate for puppies. I am sorry to hear about your loss from parvo. Parvo is extremely difficult to cure. If you don't feel comfortable with your veterinarian, you have the right to choose a different one.
